Garment Choices

Leather care begins the moment a consumer decides to purchase a leather garment. There are several considerations

Choosing a Leather Garment

  • Fit --- Consider buying a garment that is loose.  Leather should not be tight as the skins used in assembly may have been stretched during the tanning process.  They tend to relax during wear and cleaning, much like a denim fabric that conforms to the owner’s size and shape over time.
  • Type of Material --- Skins used in garments have a variety of sources.  When choosing a leather garment, it is important to realize the type of wear it will receive.  Cowhides are most common and most rugged.  They are usually withstand the most rugged wear.  Pigskins are widely used and are a byproduct of the pork industry.  Clothing made from pigskins are often less expensive and are much thinner. They do not withstand as much wear and tear as cowhide products.  The most expensive and softest garments are often manufactured from lamb skins.  Lambs are usually raised for their wool.  There are fewer lamb skins on the market making the lambskin more expensive.  More tears and blemishes occur during normal wear and tear due to the soft, supple nature of the lamb.  People who are harder on clothing should consider cowhide for its durability.  Others may prefer the softer, more fragile types.
  • Type of Finish --- Smooth Leather is chosen due to its repellent nature.  Many motorcycle enthusiasts choose this kind because of its durability.  Most moisture does not soak into the skins.  When they get wet, they are easily air-dried.  Nubucks and Suedes are often chosen for their appearance.  Many people overlook the absorbent nature of the skins when purchasing.  They are lured by the soft, wonderful texture.  They require more frequent cleaning.
  • Color --- There are many color choices in leather garments.  Our technicians are well versed in matching colors.  We can carefully blend our leather finishes to match most garments.  Lighter colors tend to show more wear and tear.  Their appearance tends to become dingy and requires cleaning sooner than most dark colors.
